I hate to rain on your parade (really, I do -- but that has never stopped
me from mouthing off before), but it strikes me that a mailing list is not a
good format for this kind of thing. Mailing lists facilitate active
communication and/or discussion, more-or-less in real-time, whereas job
information is more of a database-ish thing, designed to be referenced by
different people at different times. Additionally, in our case, usage is
likely going to very low, and a mailing lists are based on participation --
i.e., subscription.
I think Mike Ledoux's suggestion of an interactive web thing is a good
one. Sure, you can archive a mailing list on the web, but that strikes me
as hammer myopia ("When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look
like a nail.").
Can we put TWiki or PHPNuke or one of these other web tools you've been
playing with to this purpose, Bruce? I'm thinking two sections (folders,
topics, forums, whatever): One for geeks-seeking-jobs, and one for
employers-seeking-geeks.
As far as mis-use goes, I think the expected usage of this service would
be so minimal that we can do it by hand. The ground rules you posted are a
good start. In order to avoid being spammed by head-hunters, I think we
should have some kind of phrasing that the job/person must be in "the NH
area" (handwave), and directly involve Linux in a substantial fashion.
Or maybe we should just post a link to http://geekfinder.com and be done
with it? (Ha Ha, only serious.)
What do others think?
