Primarily it is a planning event. The focus is for people who want to
volunteer and contribute to the group, or would like the group to
head in a particular direction. It must by necessity be a bit
instructional, too: GNHLUG's history includes a lot of past efforts
us news guys could use some education on. But it's not instructional
in the sense of "this is how to set up CUPS." It might be
instructional on "this is how I run a meeting" or "this is how I
advertise the group."
I noticed that you sent out this to the "org" mailing list. I can
see where
having too many people at this event might be disabling to the
event, but are
we sure that the people that are on the "org" mailing list are
really in tune
with what the greater membership wants?
This is the RFC beta 1. First, we run the trial balloon past the -org
list, then we'll bring in more voices. Before the event, I'd like to
specifically invite every LUG coordinator, board member, past
activist or speaker. I did not intend to make a public announcement,
but I could be swayed on that if someone feels strongly.
Are we sure that the "govs" know what
GNHLUG wants to be when it grows up?
No. In fact, I happen to believe that it's a trick question, without
an answer. But I'd like the group to try to work through to that
realization.
Secondly, presentations are great when you have a leader and a
bunch of
followers, but when you have a bunch of "alpha-males" (or "alpha-
females")
in the group, and the group is only five people, perhaps it is
overkill and
underwhelm.
This is an UnConference (tm) and not a conference. Reference: http://

There are no presentations, only discussions amongst peers. The
Discussion Leader is the poor buzzard put in charge with the
assignment of trying to work the group up to a consensus first on
what the agenda for the hour is, and then manage the discussion.
Perhaps a striped shirt, whistle and penalty flag would be appropriate.
If this is a "planning event" I would like to see "topics do be
discussed", with the same topics as you have listed as
"presentations", but no
presentations per se.
I tried to avoid the word "presentation" because that's one person
talking and twenty sleeping, er, listening. I did slip only once, in
the "PROPOSED SESSION #4" where I propose to talk about "How To Do A
Presentation" for the LUG or other groups.
Everything else is intended to be a discussion, a group of peers
sitting around, with a referee to keep the discussion moving, try to
get all voices heard, and clear up any traffic jams.
After the topics are chosen perhaps some emails with those subject
titles to the list for ideas and discussion (or even, dare I say
it, Wiki conversations), to get input and ideas from the mailing
lists.
I'm a wiki fanatic. I would like to preserve the entire discussion,
both planning leading up to it, and the threads of conversation that
occur.
What grudges? I don't know of any grudges.....
That would be great, if there are none. Perhaps that was a poor
choice of words. Let's see how this develops.
