I'm using the IPChains IPmasq that comes with Linux...I like it, works well.

Ah, okay. Then presumably everything is on the same subnet. When eth0
is brought up, routes should automatically get installed which will
allow you to reach any node on your subnet. You should not have to
configure any extra routes at all.
So getting rid of the default gateway on your Linux box is the right
thing to do; sounds like you've already done that.
If you intend to share the ppp connection among the other machines on
your home LAN, you might want to read up on firewall configuration, etc.
I'm reading O'Reilly's book on Linux firewalls right now actually and
I'm pretty impressed. Lots of good info and the focus is on setting up
firewalls for a home LAN.
