Generally, very little.  Most of what is different is cosmetic.  When you
stick to applications from one or the other, you can do things like drag
and drop, i.e. from a gnome file manager window you can drag and drop a
jpg onto your gnome panel, and it will become decorated by that jpg file.

KDE does similar things.  I believe I'd heard that there was going to be
more cooperation between the two groups, so that their applications would
interoperate better.  But maybe that was a pipe dream... ;)
