  Well, it sounds like Perl got installed correctly, but Apache can no longer
find it.

  We need a little more information, if you want to keep the newer Perl
install.

  Are you trying to do a plain old CGI script?  Or are you doing something
fancier, like using mod_perl or embedding Perl in a webpage?

  What is the error message you get when you try to run a Perl script via
Apache?  Have you checked Apache's error log (it often gives the reason
something failed)?

  Did you monkey with Apache's configuration files in the process of setting
up the new Perl install?  If so, what did you change?

  Alternatively, you could try removing (or hiding) the Perl install you
created, and reinstalling the Debian package, in the hopes that dpkg will fix
things up for you.
