I run framebuffer. If you have it compiled in your kernel, you put
the line:
vga = XXX
in lilo.conf, or vga = ask to have it ask you the mode.
One caution is that if you have it ask, you give it the hex # of the
mode you want, but if you use the vga = XXX in lilo.conf, you use the
decimal equiv. I got a vesafb how-to at:

I personnally love running my console at 1280x1024, but then again I
have a 20" monitor.
