I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your suggestions, but
it turned out to be something utterly bizarre. There had been a previous
failed installation of RH 6.1, and later attempts to install weren't
showing the first 32 GB hard drive (the Windows drive), but were correctly
showing my 8 GB Linux drive.
The problem? Somehow, a 40 GB partition had been placed on the 32
GB drive--40 GB being the total of BOTH of my hard drives. After deleting
that improbable partition, the install went fine, and I'm happily playing
with Linux now!
