Today, Paul Lussier gleaned this insight:

Gnome and KDE both have sound mixers... the gnome one looks nicer
(IMNSHO) but it's big and bulky. Both are accessible from the "start"
menus under multimedia.  Er, that is, if you're in one or the other.

If you're on RH 6.1, the start menus also have a menu for programs from
which ever one you AREN'T in... so the other mixer will be there, under
multimedia.
