I can't really offer any particular help here except to say that I've done
this on a few different systems, and had no major problems. I did notice
that every once in a while I'd lose a mouse click or so on one of them,
but other than that, no trouble.
Try making sure he's using the right serial port settings. You'll also
need to reconfigure the mouse in X -- change the protocol from ps/2 to
"auto" or some other protocol if auto doesn't detect the mouse properly.
