Hello everyone. I'll admit upfront the I am a Linux "newbie". It took me five distributions,(Turbolinux, Red Hat 6.1, Caldera 2.2, Corel 1.0 and Mandrake) before I finally got Mandrake Linux 7.0 to install successfully on two desktop PC's and my personal notebook. I like the looks of the system, but I'm having a devil of a time setting up my Internet connection. On my Windows NT/Linux dual boot machine, I've got a Motorola 56K external modem connected to COM1. I configured my ISP information using KPPP and the modem goes out, dials the number and connects but refuses to logon with my password. That is using PAP. I reconfigured the type of connection to character based, and then it dials out, connects in text mode, asks me for my userID and password, and connects (supposedly at 57600 or so it says). I click on "continue" and then try to start Netscape Communicator. It loads and then runs extremely slow. I have yet to establish any connection with another site. On my notebook (a Fujitsu Lifebook with 450 MHz AMD k6-2, I thought I would have to buy another external modem, but last night I downloaded a Linux driver for the Lucent Technologies Win Modem and that works like a champ. However, it does the thing as the external modem. I read the article in the March Linux magazine concerning modem connections, tried to research as much as I could over the web (using Windows) as I am now, but I couldn't find any solution to this problem or even reference to this type of problem. Does anyone out there have any clue as to what I'm doing wrong or suggestions on how to troubleshoot? I'd really like to get a connection established under Linux so I can keep up to date on updates. Another related question. I didn't mention it above but the ISP that I'm trying to connect to is MSN. I don't think they are very cooperative in supporting Linux (although they did provide me with the correct DNS information to make the connection). I work for the Navy and travel all around the country so I need an ISP with access numbers all across the country. The file on the newbie disk on your website lists only NH-based ISPs. Does anyone know if Mindspring, Concentric, et al do a fairly good job of providing Linux support? Does anyone have any irst-hand experience or recommendations? I'm willing to set up an account with another ISP if need be but I want to make sure that it will support access using Linux. Thanks for any recommendations or assistance that you may be able to provide. I'm currently President of the Seacoast IBM Users Group and I plan on sharing my Linux experiences along with a full demo of the system (and Star Office) to our group on May 12, 1999. My presentation will be titled "Linux: An alternative Desktop Operating System". We meet in Dover, NH at the St.Charles Parish Hall on 570 Central Avenue starting at 7:00 p.m. . Any of you who are in the area are welcome to attend our meeting that night. - Stan DeWitt ********************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following text in the *body* (*not* the subject line) of the letter: unsubscribe gnhlug **********************************************************
