Coming off the 68K in the same time period (and, same employer - wink)
as Michael, I was impressed at the concept of actually executing the
instruction *after* a return (i.e. branch delay slot.)

Hmm, I thought ratfor was merely a preprocessor.  From its original
man page, way long ago, it was described as having the ability to
"...turn a rational dialect of FORTRAN into ordinary, irrational
FORTRAN..." :-)
