If you have the manual for your modem, you can also look for an S-register
which controls "escape guard time". Better modems allow you to specify that a
short period of no data sent must precede and/or follow the escape sequence
(three plus (+) signs).

You've got a few options.
One is to go into linuxconf, edit the configuration for your dialup account,
scroll down a page or two until you find the init script, and edit it there.
Another is to edit the chat script directly. On Red Hat, this will be
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp?, where ? is a number, usually zero
(0), unless you have more then one PPP account setup.
Still a third option is to fire up a terminal program (e.g., minicom), issue
"ATZ" (modem reset), "ATS2=255" (set the escape character), and "AT&W" (write
current settings to NVRAM).
Hope this helps!
