oracle 7->8 migrate

I'm using my linux laptop to connect to a dec unix server and upgrade from oracle 7 to 8. no X or motif on the server and I can't seem to get orainst started in text mode, anyone have any suggestions, I can't seem to find any documentation on text mode options for orainst!
