Hi folks,
Anyone have a guess as to why video performance is sub-par on my 400MHz
P-III Compaq Deskpro EN? It has a built-in ATI Rage Pro with 8MB of
memory, so I'm using the Mach64 server (3.3.6, under RH6.2).
Some quicktime videos viewed with xanim and also mpeg's viewed with mtv
are really, really choppy. Even in tiny windows. Average frame rate
is ~10fps. Usually less.
I don't think it's memory-starved: I've got 128MB and I wasn't running
Netscape at the time, and I'd just restarted X to get back all the
memory that Gnome/Enlightenment routinely leak over time. The vid's
are on disk, which is a reasonably fast ultra/wide SCSI drive.
Also tried running just the X server & mtv (no window mangler, etc.) but
the performace was almost exactly the same. (This also got around the issue
with Enlightenment & KDE both polling the CD-ROM continually to see if anything's
in there.)
Thanks!
