Listening to NPR on the way in today, the "security consultants" said
to expect a bunch of copycats to start happening today. They also
said congress is talking about increasing penalties for virus
writers. How about some penalties for those who don't bother
designing security into their systems (and yes, I heard the MS line
about "user desired features, that we recommend they don't use" If
so, why do you turn them on by default, why don't you make them a pain
to turn on [massive WARNING THIS CAN DESRTROY YOUR SYSTEM messages],
why don't they design the OS to clearly separate users (true
multi-user) so you can't blow away everyone at once, and why don't
they implement sandboxes like Java for their scripting? It can be
done, it has been done, it will be done, so saying you can't do it is
NOT an acceptable answer.)

Thought for today: A transistor protected by a fast-acting fuse will
protect the fuse by
blowing first.
