APC also has a "Trade Up" program that allows a credit for trading in old
units against new ones. I used this program to swap a couple of rather
old (like, so old the batteries were not replaceable) units for new ones
with a much richer feature set - and upgraded the capacity at the same
time. It was nice because it solved the issue of battery disposal very
neatly.
Depending on the age of the units (and especially if the history is
unknown) this might be an option worth considering for you. Maybe someone
more knowledgeable than I can comment on whether age and (ab)use might
cause performance degradation, especially regarding surge and spike
suppression?
