There is a badblocks(8) command under Linux that allows you do check for bad blocks on 
an existing file system without destroying the data.  However, if you have a system 
which may be showing the first signs of failure, you are better off making a backup. 

BTW: I have a Western Digital 8.6GB drive which was causing me some problems.  I first 
thought the problem was with the controller or mother board. The drive woulds 
sometimes just reseek, other times it would go offline. Eventually, I contacted 
Western Digital and received a replacement free of charge. The replacement drive has 
been working flawlessly for several months.
