   Then to me, pretty still wouldn't be an issue -- scriptability would be
the issue.

   Unfortunately, Debian doesn't do that per se.  There are some folks
talking about adding scripting to the install process, but right now the
only way to accomplish this is quite kludgy.

   Have you tried "official" Debian CDs?  Debian has had quite a problem
with people botching up Debian CD-ROMs.  So Debian has now implemented a
policy of creating a CD image and only allowing the term "official" to be
used on these known good CDs.  While those bad CDs reflect poorly on Debian,
it actually isn't a Debian problem -- it's a problem with the idiots who
made the CDs.

   FWIW, this is an issue among the Debian developers.  There is a lot of
talk about how to revamp the release process.  I'm willing to bet that
"woody" (the next release after "potato") will be released well under a year
from potato's release date.
