There is software called "gaim". It is the best that I've found for
Linux. It closely emulates the window's version of instant
messenger. The redhat package for i386's is found below:
http://www.redhat.com/swr/i386/gaim-0.9.10-2.i386.html
There is also a Debian package available using apt-get.
