Tom,
The Celeron officially is only a 66MHz FSB processor where the Pentium
III's are both 100MHz and 133MHz front end bussed. Therefore processes
that are more I/O based will be slower where CPU intensive processes are
not as much difference with a Pentium III.
Another item of major difference is the L2 cache is smaller. It is only
128kb but, it runs at the full speed of the CPU. The older Pentium
II/III have 512kb of L2 cache but they run at 1/2 the CPU speed. The
newer Coppermine chips have 256kb of L2 cache and run at the full CPU
speed.
The last major item of difference is the inability to run the Celeron in
an SMP configuration. That's the official line from Intel but, I
currently have a dual processed 366MHz Celeron system at home that has
the FSB overclocked to 105MHz . . . . at 567MHz SMP system. You just
need the right equipment and little bit of knowledge.
