Additionally, I meant to mention that serial heartbeats are considered
more reliable than ethernet heartbeats, and are stated to be preferred.
[Personally I'm not convinced there's much of a difference. They both
have an external interface, connected by a cable. <shrug>] This concept is
universal amongst HA solutions, or at least all those I've been exposed
to, which includes Kimberlite, Heartbeat, and HP's MC/ServiceGuard. It's
also stated in the HA Howto on the LDP site, as I recall. As is the idea
of dedicating ethernet segments to heartbeats. You simply DON'T want
other traffic on them, since a flooded ethernet can obviously cause your
heartbeat to be unreliable.
