Give up. One of my first recommendations for Netscape under Linux is to
disable Java entirely. Netscape's JVM just plain sucks.

If that isn't acceptable... first, make sure you've got the latest and
greatest version of Netscape Navigator from the web. I think they're at 4.73
now. Note that I say *Navigator*, not Communicator. Navigator is the "I'm
just a browser" version, not the "I'm a browser, a mail reader, a word
processor, and a Toast-R-Oven" Communicator. Navigator seems to be
significantly more stable.

Next, make sure you've got your X display server's font configured
correctly. I don't remember the exact issue, but apparently, Netscape's JVM
expects certain fonts to be present, and dies if they're not. In particular,
one of Red Hat's 6.x releases shipped with a font server config file that left
out a needed directory.

FWIW, here's the font catalog from my /etc/X11/fs/config file:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
/usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType,
/usr/local/share/fonts/win

  Hope this helps!
