'split' is a POSIX command, I believe, and is therefore available on
POSIX-compliant UNIX systems; we have it on Tru64 UNIX.

'tar' is fairly standard, but I don't know how much GNU has embellished
it to the point of incompatibility. For the last 5-6 years, I have
brought my large files home by creating a tar file (uncompressed),
and dd'ed it out onto a QIC tape on my Tru64 UNIX Alpha Workstation,
and used dd and tar under Linux to unpack it. However, I don't know
off the top of my head how we (Tru64) handle multiple volumes; the
tar man page has a kajillion implementation-specific switches.
