Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has a full time
connection. Many, even, of those who do will not maintain a full time
IRC client connection. Therefore, to the extent that such a channel
prevents useful questions and solutions from being posted to the
mailing lists, I think that it would be bad thing. So I think that
hanging out and exchanging words (even heated) is best done on the
mailing lists.
On the other hand, providing a relatively real time way to
guide someone in debugging their problem, would be a good thing. (So
long as the things tried and results were eventually summarized to the
mailing lists.)
Or perhaps, having never used one, I'm misunderstanding
something about IRC connections.
