Not necessarily. The identd daemon is used for identifcation purposes. It can
retrieve such items as the user name, os type, etc...

A prime example of when this comes into play is when you connect to an IRC server.

It just basically provides minimal identification. In fact, some IRC servers won't
let you connect without identd enabled (efnet comes to mind...)
