I have used a laptop with the little joystick mouse for years.
Pros: You can leave your hands on the keyboard.
You can put a couple different kinds of covers on them (soft, hard
grippy, etc.)
Cons: The Toshiba laptops that I have been using seem to have a problem
with drift after a while.
Prolonged use will cause pain in your hand/finger.
I used to use a Dell that had a little trackball. I liked it, but of
course it did not hold up as well (exposed moving parts).
I just had the opportunity to go with either a new Dell (touchpad) or a
new Toshiba (joystick). After trying both I decided to stick with the
Toshiba in spite of the above. I usually just attach an external mouse
when traveling, and a *really fantastic* keyboard and mouse when I am at
work.
The keyboard company is called Kinesis. I can recommed them very
highly. They have a number of keyboards, I use the one called 'The
Essential'.
