You can use 'fsck -c' which will do a surface scan. Alternatively, you
can use 'badblocks -w /dev/hda1'; note that the -w option to badblocks
will wipe out any data (including the filesystem) that's on that device,
and you'll have to use mkfs to recreate the filesystem.
