so I can know what this beast is.

Probably not: HSP means Host Signal Processing. I.e. all of the signal
processing has to be done in software. I have a Conexant HSP and there
is no Linux driver. My wife's laptop has Lucent (DSP) winmodem, but
Lucent *does* supply a linux driver for it (and it works well! uses
/dev/ttyS14 :-). See linmodems.org for more info. It is possible, but
not likely the modem (or chip) vendor has provided a linux driver to do
the HSP...
