The standard modem actually works? ;-)

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this.

Here are some rules of thumb, but keep in mind that they are *far* from
universal:

  - Most (not all) PCI modems are Win modems
  - Most (not all) ISA modems are standard modems
  - Most modems with jumpers to set configuration are standard modems
  - Most modems which claim to be compatible with DOS are standard
    modems

If you want to be 100% sure it will work, get an external modem. RS-232 is
a beautiful thing. You also get pretty lights to watch flash. ;-)

If you want to avoid cable clutter, I've got a "Modem Blaster 56K II" which
works great. Creative Labs part number DI5601. It is an ISA card, and has
jumpers to select the IRQ and base address manually, or run in PnP mode. I
got it at Best Buy. (I undoubtedly paid too much, but at the time, I needed a
modem *right away*, and that was what they had in stock.)
