Check Edit -> Prefs -> Navigator -> Apps, and look for anything about
.tar.gz and/or application/x-gzip, and tweak the action.
I would also check /etc/mime.types, /etc/mime-magic, and /etc/mailcap (and
their equivalents) to make sure they aren't going something funky.
