hi,

a handy site to have bookmarked is wotsit's file format page.  just about any
file format you can imagine is listed here, and it has helped me out more times
than i care to remember.  here is the url ...

a quick search dug up this information about jpeg files ...

SOI = Start Of Image = 'FFD8'

 This marker must be present in any JPG file *once* at the beginning of the
file.

(Any JPG file starts with the sequence FFD8.)

EOI = End Of Image = 'FFD9'

  Similar to EOI: any JPG file ends with FFD9.
