In my experience, phone trees are only useful with groups
whose membership list doesn't change much and where the
likelihood of finding any given member at their specified
phone is high. School snow-day notifications are a good
example (essentially static membership and everybody's
likely to be home in the mornings when notifications are
usually issued) while GNHLUG meetings would seem to be a
rather poor example given that "members" can "join" and
"leave" the GNHLUG pretty much unnoticed, and many of us
are on the move during the day making it hard to contact
us via telephone.
I agree that going ahead and having the meeting (in some
form, if only to gripe and drink) does seem to be the least
objectionable option, though I don't have to drive as far as
some do. However, in such situations we definitely should
still issue an email notice regarding the changed status
of the meetings so those who do manage to see it in time
can make an informed decision...
