There are some GUI dialers like KPPP or GnomePPP that have monitors on
them. If you check /var/log/messages, there should be some indication of
why the connection is dying. 

Off the top of my head, here are some things that might kill the
connection: requiring the dial-in server to authenticate itself to you
(take `auth` out of the options file), make sure you're using the right
authentication type (chap, pap, ms-chap, ms-chapv2), add `proxyarp` so
the server can route back to you.
