Last winter I set up wireless between my laptop and a desktop for about
$150 total (that is, $75 per wireless NIC). Desktop acts as router to
LAN and internet. This is 2Mb/s Webgear Aviator 2.4 (www.webgear.com).
The 11 Mb/s (e.g. Zoom) wireless NIC's seem to be going for about $160
per NIC. So about $320 to network his laptop via 11 Mb/s wireless.
Base stations are not needed. Set up a "adhoc network". Try to get
802.11 compliant cards rather than proprietary protocols.
Some links I have at hand (the first is very good):

http://www.linux-wlan.com/
http://world.std.com/~corey/raylink.html (webgear driver)
http://www.wlana.com/ (802.11)
Feel free to ask if you or your friend have question.
