su root
chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0 and/or /dev/ttyS1.
This will allow any user access to the serial ports:
gaf@gaf:~ > ls -l /dev/ttyS0
crw-rw-rw-   1 root     uucp       4,  64 Jun 27 12:18 /dev/ttyS0        

My pilot is connected to this port.
