That's actually my point, although I didn't really make it too well
(gee...THAT'S never happened before). Did the developers actually attempt
to duplicate the "real" audial signature of a dog, a cat, a phone, etc or
did they develop a system to provide separate and distinct signals to the
brain that the patient would learn to interpret for themselves as a dog, a
cat, a phone, etc. I can see if they say "Oh, no, it really does sound like
a dog." After all, conversion from audio signal to electrical signal and
back is done everyday around us with phones, mics, speakers, etc. But,
anyone who's listened to their own voice on a tape recorder knows that you
never sound the same as you do IRL (due to MANY factors). So, they way I
should have phrased the question was probably "If I had the implant myself,
would the way it tells my brain a dog barking sounds be the same as they way
my normal hearing has interpreted a dog barking? If not, which one is the
TRUE sound of a dog barking?"

If you really want to get into that, how do you know for sure that I
interpret the sound of a phone ringing the same way you do? I guess
my
point is, if it allows them to distinguish between different sounds
and
correctly identify them, is there really a difference?
