My brother lives in Gainesville, Florida and had cable service for about a
year.  A few months ago he began getting similar problems and eventually
learned that because the cable connections are not true dedicated channels
they can suffer the same problems with the ISP overselling bandwidth that
phone ISPs do.  When he was one of the first people in his neighborhood who
had the cable modem he had great service.  As time went on and more people
connected he began to see more and more frequent dips in service.  He
eventually switched to DSL.  Although it's a little slower than the cable
modem's peak performance (due to his distance from the local switch),
because it is a dedicated service it's consistency pays off in the long run.
Unfortunately, having DSL available is not an option for everyone (I cannot
get it where I currently live in Epping).

        This reminds me of a question I have wanted to ask. Recently (say
        within the last 2-3 weeks), my Mediaone (aka ATT Broadband) cable
modem
        connection has been *REALLY* poor. E.g. frequent outages where I
can't
        even ping my local router for 2-10 mins at a stretch, and the Cable
        Modem will often loose Block Sync (little green led, lower right on
        lancity) for about as long. I notice these outges many times
        (10-30?) a day on bad days.

        If I run tcpdump during an outage I often see "arp who-has" and
similar
        packets arriving, so I don't think it is the wiring in and around my
        house that is the problem.

        Anyone else seeing this? I am in the Manchester area.

        Anyway, the thought crossed my mind could these outages be due to
Ddos
        attacks that flood the channels? Seems unlikely, but I wonder...
