If I didn't see it, I wouldn't believe it.

The problem turned out to be that my ISP coincidentally changed it's DNS
addresses the same day Ryan and I both installed Mandrake, and they didn't
bother to tell anyone.  I think they assumed we all use the "server
assigned dns" option in Windows.  

Thanks to those of you who pointed out the addresses were toast.  My
connection worked fine in Windows, so I didn't question  it.
(I forgot about that server assigned Windows setting).

I now have things up and running fine in Mandrake.   :)
