There's a fair amount of USB development activity in the
2.4.x world, with some of that work supposedly backported
to 2.2.18 - you can find archives of the kernel-developers
mailing lists in places like
http://www.kernel.org/
and
http://www.lib.uaa.alaska.edu/linux-kernel/
...and probably many others can be found on the WWW.
