The original Athlon chips ran the onboard cache RAM at half of the core
clock speed, which caused a not insignificant performance hit. The
"Thunderbird" chips run the onboard cache at core clock. "Thunderbird" is
technically just a codename. AMD calls it the "Athlon processor with
performance enhancing cache", which is why everyone still uses the codename.

Yup. Half the cache, although it still runs at core clock, IIRC.
Supposedly, the Duron is still SMP capable, although I don't know if anyone
has verified this. All in all, AMD seems poises to really take over the CPU
market. Their processors are faster, cheaper, and more reliable than Intel's
offerings. The only thing Intel has going for them at this point is the brand
name, and with their recent product quality problems, that may start to lose
its shine.
