Get Emacs, or (even better IMHO), XEmacs.  Learn how to use the "M-x
compile" command.  Learn how to use DDD or else how to use the "M-x
gdb" command.  Learn how to use Makefiles.  Read _The Unix Programming
Environment_.

I use all of these tools for my regular development, and I'm very
happy with them.
