Oh yeah, I forgot about this one.
A nice variant on this is to use LOADLIN to load the files you need from
that directory. LOADLIN, for those who don't know, is a Linux boot loader for
real-mode MS-DOS. The advantage of LOADLIN over LILO here is that you don't
have to worry about Windoze-land utilities messing with the sensitive LILO
boot map. LOADLIN uses standard DOS calls to read the disk, so it doesn't
care if the files get moved around.
Windows 2000, which switches into protected mode far earlier then Windows 9X
does, might cause some problems, but you could probably work around them with
a little effort.
