If you are a beginner in the Linux realm, *NIX security is probably not
something you already have any expertise in.  You must read the HOWTOs, the
man pages, books on the subject, newsgroups, etc.  This can take time,
during which your Linux box is wide open.  Also, if you are a beginner to
Linux, there are many, many things you must spend the time to read up on in
order to become productive.  Firewall construction (like it or not) is not
always studied as carefully as it should be.

I've found Firestarter to be an excellent tool for putting a decent set of
firewall rules in place, which can be later modified when you learn more
about how to properly set up a firewall.  It's not perfect, but it beats the
snot out of being wide open while you're learning the ins and outs.
