For a few decades, I submit you should stay away from public key
cryptosystems entirely.

A new algorithm is hard to predict. Technology is easier - and it is
looking more and more probable that quantum computers will be
developed over the next 20 years or so. One of the few algorithms
they have developed for a quantum computer is one for factoring
integers. Roughly speaking (IIRC), an N qubit quantum computer can
factor an N bit number in N steps. I have read that all known public
key cryptosystems can be broken with a quantum computer.
