For many folks, what you mention here is indeed a decent setup.  For my
own use, it didn't quite cover everything I wanted.  The negatives as I
saw it:

1) Having to purchase more hardware.  :)
2) Limited amount of port forwarding.
3) Less flexible.

Additionally, for me it's not a big deal to have the machine on all the
time - it's actually a requirement as I receive mail and serve up webpages
from my home box.  

In other words, it all comes down to what you want to do with it.  8)
