Definitely an indication that the memory/cache was being run on the
ragged edge.

Fwiw I and a friend of mine occasionally build overclocked PC's.  As
a "proof" of the system we typically like to run a loop overnight or
for even 24 hours, of Linux kernel builds.  This usually thrashes
the system pretty well and will ferret out components or settings
which might be on the hairy edge.  This doesn't hit graphics of
course but there are things you can run under windoze to run your 3d
card through the ringer.  But doing this first, before hitting the
graphics hard, will eliminate some variables if you have difficulties
there.
