Could you be a little more specific? What is different? Resolution? Color
depth? Window manager? Desktop? Background?

Well, GDM (GNOME Display Manager, the GUI login component) appears to be
complaining that your home directory is not owned by UID 0. The thing is, UID
0 is "root", and root shouldn't own your home directory. So I am not exactly
sure what is wrong.
In addition to the commands Kevin Clark asked you to run, run these two, and
report the output:
id root
id bmb
> date enomem gdm[791]: gdm_auth_user_remove: Ignoring suspiciously looking
> cookie file /home/bmb/.Xauthority
I see this all the time, so I think it is benign.
