  Promise Technology (http://www.promise.com) specializes in advanced IDE
controllers.  They used to be known for their caching IDE controllers back in
the days of 386s and 486s.  These days, they are known for their PCI UltraATA
cards and ATA RAID cards.  Supposedly, Linux support exists, but I don't know
how well it works, or with what cards.

  Keep in mind that IDE sucks at multitasking, so the more IDE drives you add
to the system, the slower it will get.  Also, IDE traditionally uses an IRQ
for each chain, so ten drives = five chains = five IRQs used.  (PCI and
specialty chipsets may help this problem, but YMMV.)
