I've been using X10 equipment since they started making it (about 17
years ago). Generally, I'm happy with it. However, I don't rely on it
personally for anything important. (I do have clients which use it.)
It has problems behaving consistently for various reasons. It can be
made more consistent by careful design, installation and testing, but,
as someone else in this thread said, it is inherently unreliable.
I've heard of problems with modules failing regularly. My personal
experience hasn't shown this. I've had the same failure rate with
regular mechanical light switches as with X10. However, I've had a
client with a much higher failure rate. Their replacements seem to be
working properly, so it may have been a bad batch (all were originally
installed at same time when the house was built).
The other home automation alternatives (like CEBus, etc.) are much more
expensive, but more reliable. I find there is a lot more software and
more hardware options for X10.
I can't comment on recent software (for Linux or other OSes). Any
software I've used, I've developed.
