I'm currently using an HP SureStore 818 DLT7000 8-tape changer with the amanda
software here. Works like a charm. There are a variety of other changers out
there I know are being used with linux based on the traffic on the
amanda-users mail list. I'm pretty sure that as long as you stick to scsi
hw, you're safe.
As for backup software to control them, most of your commercial packages
support whatever changer devices are on the market. I've looked at
PerfectBackup and Arkeia, and both support all the major types of changers,
as does Amanda.
Of course, if you want to use home grown backup scripts, you'll also have to
write something to control the changer mechanism itself, which shouldn't be
too hard, since it's just seen as a scsi device and uses scsi commands to
manipulate the robotics.
